Chapter 2 :

Be His Executive Assistant

******

Violette:

AFTER saying that sentence, I just left.

I don't care about whatever he says. I'm correct, right? He's annoying! With his expressionless face, he could insult me dozens of times today. He doesn't even feel guilty and instead blames me. What the heck? Justin wasn't like that before!

I walked out of his room and the corner of my eye caught him raising an eyebrow at me. Well, damn! He's still acting like that? Okay, why does this room suddenly feel hotter than hell?

As I rushed out of his office, I slammed the door shut. I was satisfied that I had slammed the door shut so hard. I thought maybe that would help him think. I went home—not caring if he would punish me or what—and didn’t care about the looks people were giving me. Leaving the company, I headed to the employee parking lot and found my motorcycle. It felt like my veins were popping out when I turned the key. I put on my helmet quickly and when my motorcycle started, I drove it at high speed. Crazy! Why is my workplace now being the place I feared the most?

When I arrived home, I immediately parked my motorbike outside and entered the house with wide step. Jonathan, my uncle, looked at me with amazement.

"Did you skip work?" he asked. He stood up from the couch where he usually watched television.

"I ran away," I said carelessly and I walked with my feet stamping; I went straight into my room. He seemed to be gaping, but I don't know, I didn't see him. I just closed my bedroom door and lay down on my bed. Burying my face in the bed and hoping that I would never meet that devil again.

Suddenly, my bedroom door opened.

"Tell me what made you run away from your workplace today."

Okay, that was Jonathan's voice. I lifted my face and immediately sat on the edge of the bed. He was still leaning on the door frame, his hand on the doorknob.

"I was asked to change my position to become the CEO's executive assistant and that CEO turned out to be Justin."

My uncle's eyes narrowed, he looked surprised.

"Justin? I mean—are you sure? How could he be a CEO there?"

"Hm. Never mind, Nathan. I have a headache."

Nathan sighed. "Okay, but promise me you'll be back to work tomorrow. If you don't, I'm taking away your lunch."

My eyes widened. Oh please. Lunch is the best! Aaarrgh! Why does everyone seem to be pressuring me to see that guy again? Damn it.

Nathan closed my bedroom door again and I threw myself on the bed. This was the worst day in my entire life and I thought the next day would be much worse.

******

Well, I think I need a mask to cover my face.

Seriously? Yesterday I left Justin in his room with harsh words and behave arrogantly. And now? Where will I put my face if I go back to him and ask him for a job? After thinking about it, how could I leave my job just because of that one man. There are many things I should care about more than that man.

But I was so embarrassed! I’m sure that man would scold me to death. Insult me to my bone.

I got off my motorcycle, entered the company with shaking and cold hands. My lips is dry and my face is hot. I realize that I’m so embarrassed. I’m sure as hell that Justin will insult me for being so arrogant yesterday. But, okay. Relax, Vio. If he insults you, you have high heels ready to throw at his head.

I ran into the elevator and went straight to the thirteenth floor. I was so upset the whole time I was in the elevator. The 'ding' sound from the elevator sounded like a death gong in my ears.

I went outside and walked slowly towards that impressive CEO’s door. Right, very impressive.

My feet felt so heavy walking towards the door. When I arrived, my body suddenly froze. I swallowed my saliva and tried to calm the rumbling in my chest. I inhaled and exhaled my breath for several times. After feeling calm, I clenched my fists and raised them into the air, in front of my face.

"Okay." I muttered—cheering myself up—then I knocked on the door while closing my eyes in fear. Three times.

"Yes, come in."

My eyes widened. Okay, now's the time.

I opened the door, lowered my head in shame, and closed it behind me. When I turned around, I jumped back because the man was standing just around two meters in front of me!

"H—hi," I said, then I realized I sounded like an idiot. Damn it!!!

"Why did you come back? Didn’t I not the Justin you know? And if I'm not mistaken, you said something like, 'Listen, Mr. Bossy. You. Are. Not. The. Justin. I. Know. Period.'

...am I right, Miss?"

I bit my lower lip. I'm dead!

"I—I... Sorry, I umm—"

"Is it polite to say that to your boss, Miss?" he said, tilting his head with a sarcastic smile. He was taking a swipe at me.

I huffed, then clenched my fists. "No, Sir."

"Well, if you understand, why don't you come out?"

He was baiting me again, as usual. "Because I need my job."

He looked at me and it looked like he was investigating me.

"You need it, but you were the one who threw it away."

I took a deep breath, letting out all of my emotions that were really demanding to be released.

"I—ARGH!! HOW ELSE AM I GOING TO APOLOGIZE, HUH?!!" I yelled and damn! I failed to control my emotions. He raised an eyebrow.

He just kept staring at me, waiting for my next reaction. Who wouldn't be angry when I yelled at him but were still ignored? He’s really a jerk.

"Okay, tell me how to make you forgive me. I've had enough of this," I said, starting to get annoyed. I shook my head and shrugged. He put both of his hands in his pockets, then looked me up and down with narrowed eyes. He thinks I'm a trash can, eh? Why is he looking at me like that?

I huffed, trying to hold back my anger. “Walk round the room at a brisk pace, three times.”

WHAT?

"Huh?"

He tilted his head.

"Get out of my room and don't come back if you refuse."

Oh shit. This threat again.

I sighed, closed my eyes for a moment and shrugged. When I opened them, I scratched my forehead while rolling my eyes, then I finally walked quickly around that super large room. He smirked and went back to his desk, working on his laptop again.

I kept walking fast, but I would stop every now and then. He didn't see me, did he? This was a chance to take a short break.

Wow. This room is very wide.

"Don't stop, Ms. Morgan," I heard him say shortly.

SHIT! Oh God, help me...

He has six eyes, huh? How did he know that I stopped, while his eyes were focused on his laptop? Oh my God. It's hard to fight against the devil.

I walked quickly again and after finishing, I walked towards my desk with a heavy breath. I immediately sat down in my chair. Still out of breath, suddenly I heard him speak again, breaking my concentration to adjust my breathing.

"This." He stood up from his chair, handing me a piece of paper. I stole a gleance at it and looked up at him. Then I reached for it.

"Those are the hundred rules that I told you yesterday. Read it all and obey it. I remember all of them, so don't you dare break any of them."

WHAT? HE MEMORIZED ALL THE RULES FOR ME? EVEN THOUGH HE JUST MADE THIS?

Wow, give him some applause.

"Wow. You...remembered everything? Amazing," I praised, my jaw dropping involuntarily as I shook my head in disbelief.

"Hmm," he cleared his throat, then he sat back down. He then returned to his laptop. My eyes began to explore one by one the rules he made. Well, not paying attention to his opening words anymore, I went straight to the order of the rules.

1. Arrive at the office at 6:30 am. Must arrive earlier than the CEO.

2. Wear a neat uniform and be disciplined.

3. Do not smoke.

4. Do not drink alcoholic beverages, except with the permission of the CEO.

5. Doing some of the work of the CEO’s assistants to deliver files to authorized directors and managers.

6. Must attend appointments determined by the CEO.

7. Accompany the CEO wherever he goes.

8. Only do what the CEO orders and do not neglect any of the tasks assigned.

9. Lunch or break times are determined by the CEO.

10. Has the right to provide suggestions or input and improvements to what the CEO is doing.

11. Have high manners and solidarity, especially towards the CEO.

12. Maintain your attitude.

Oh God—enough, stop this! There are a hundred of them and reading them up to twelve is already making my head spin! What the hell is this? Why does this executive assistant’s job seem like it’s sacrificing my life to him? Has this been the rule all along? Why does everything have to be from his orders and with his approval? Even lunchtime has to be his decision? It doesn’t make sense. I glared and crumpled the paper in anger.

"Hey!! Why are the rules so unreasonable, huh?!! What the heck, I just have to do what you tell me to do—okay, I can accept that, but how about lunch and break times? What if you let me take a break at night? I might pass out!!! Plus, do I have to follow you wherever you go?”

I shook my head and then I babbled again, "This one too: 'No smoking'. You know I don't smoke!!! Then, doing some of the assistant's work? I think there’s too many of them already! What do they do? My job of serving you like this is already very hard and you're making it even more complicated! This isn't an executive assistant, but a loyal bodyguard! You really—"

"Here, please give this file to the industrial manager on the twelfth floor, okay? The door is at the very end."

What?! He ignored me?!

"Just—ERGHHH!!!" I shouted. However, I realized that his eyes were staring at me with a narrowed gaze.

"Okay," I finally said after letting out a few angry breaths and unclenching my fists. Thousands of words from my mouth were burned just like that because of one word from his mouth. It was amazing. Amazing, to the point where I wanted to kick him right now.

He pushed a folder to the edge of his desk and I reluctantly went to pick it up. He didn't even look at me!! Damn his flat expression. What should I do to make it not flat anymore? Slap it with a pan? Wok?

I walked out with stomping feet, but I closed the door of the room too slowly, half-heartedly trying to hold back my emotions again. Okay, I know I can't hold my emotions stably yet because sometimes my anger still come out too.

I walked into the elevator and went down one floor. Exiting the elevator, I looked for the room at the very end and I found a sign 'International Industry Manager' in front of the door of the room. Then, I knocked on the door softly. After being invited in, I politely gave the folder from Justin and then I went back out. Well, I was more polite to them than to the CEO. Even though the CEO is the highest position here, but hey! Whose fault is it? He's annoying.

When I walked back into Justin's room and closed the door, I took a deep breath. However, when my eyes fell on Justin's desk, I gasped.

He fell asleep.

I approached him slowly and I was now standing near his desk, next to him. I was still stunned, he was asleep and his head was turned to the side, his hands were resting beneath his head.

He looks...innocent.

I tilted my head to look at his face. That’s such a baby face. Well, but this face is so annoying when he's awake. He's so cute when he's asleep; he's adorable. I didn't expect him to be so mean when he's awake. I prefer his face when he's asleep. Sleep forever, then.

I know it's mean. But trust me, I smile softly when I see his face. So cute, peaceful, and calm. Ah... If only he was like the old Justin.

I shook my head and went back to my desk. I continued reading the rules—annoyed that the person who gave me the rules was sleeping—and then my eyes felt heavy and I fell asleep.

******

I flinched; my body responded to the pain—the impulse—that was given suddenly at this moment; it was like someone had just flicked my forehead. I suddenly woke up, sat up straight, and shook my head to wake myself up completely. My eyes were now fully open. When I looked up, my eyes widened and I almost did a somersault backwards along with my chair. Almost, oh my God.

This is what made me instantly angry. JUSTIN! Yeah, Justin woke me up. Hell! Was there no other way besides flicking my forehead? Shit.

"JUSTIN!!! DON'T FLICK PEOPLE'S FOREHEADS AS YOU WISH!!" I shouted while rubbing my aching head. He just raised an eyebrow and shrugged vaguely. I gritted my teeth and glared at him.

"Well, see rule number 86. No sleeping before the CEO gives you a break time."

I clicked my tongue and then huffed. He just kept looking at me with his cold gaze.

"Yes, but don't hit my forehead—"

"Come with me to my house. It's getting late and we should finish some more errands at my house."

Huh? Another nightmare. Going to his house. "To—to your house?"

"Hm." He cleared his throat briefly, then turned around and handed me some folders. "Take these, okay?" he said, then he turned and walked out just like that. I was stunned and then I ran after him.

"Wait for me!!!!" I shouted, I ran after him until I reached his car which was neatly parked in the parking lot. It has special space for directors.

Wow, his red Bugatti is so cool and so fast. I feel so comfortable and sometimes he makes fun of me because I act like I've never been in a car.

Violette just followed Justin from behind. Entering an apartment building and taking the elevator to the 23rd floor. Oh my God, it was kind of far. The apartment building was incredibly grand. Violette was used to seeing things like that, especially considering that she used to often do many missions with Red Lion in big buildings like that. However, Violette still couldn't keep her eyes off of it, she turned her gaze around as if she was monitoring. Until without realizing it, she was left behind by Justin's steps several times.

When she arrived in front of Justin's apartment, Justin swiped a card in front of his door and pressed his password number.

Violette just kept quiet and pursed her lips when she saw him. Right when they entered, Violette looked around Justin's room. Wow, this is super elegant.

Not much different from Justin's apartment when he lived in Paris back then, but this one was dominantly colored with blackish gray. The dark and elegant impression made Violette swallow her saliva. There were many glamorous decorations on the walls and paintings by Michelangelo there. Many small crystal lamps hung in the corners of the room and it seemed that at night it would look very...um…people used to call it romantic. However, the room was not too dark. It actually looked…sweet?

Justin led Violette in and they went through a hallway. Then they arrived at a living room. There were four sofas facing each other, two long and the other two were just square shaped. In the middle of the sofas there was a table made of marble. That’s very unique. In front of it was a television.

"Sit here. I'll get you something to drink." Justin said casually and Violette could only nod. Justin went to the kitchen counter and got a large bottle of Sprite, then grabbed two glass. He then grabbed the pudding that was in the fridge and placed it on two small plates, then went outside. He brought it to Violette and she smiled.

"Thanks," Violette said. Justin sat down next to Violette and poured Sprite into his glass. After that, Justin drank it and put his glass back on the table. Violette put the folders next to her.

"Where are the files I asked you to bring earlier? Let's do it. Help me find the files that I need to sign," Justin said. Violette nodded, then started flipping through the paper and Justin lit his cigarette. When the sound of the lighter lit the cigarette in Justin's fingers, Violette watched him with a sharp gaze.

"I don't like seeing you smoke."

"Have you looked at the files I asked you for?" Justin asked. Violette rolled her eyes, Justin didn't hear her comment at all. Smoke was already spreading around them and Violette was coughing. Justin looked at the files that Violette had just given him, then took a pen from his suit pocket and signed the files one by one. Violette just watched him.

Justin looks like a bad guy. But...why does he look cool when he smokes like that? Especially when he exhales his smoky breath. Oh shit! Violette shook her head. How could she like seeing people smoke? No!!

"That's it," Justin said. "Anything else?"

Violette blinked and looked for the remaining files, but they were all done. "All done, sir."

Justin nodded. "Okay. Eat your pudding and drink."

Violette nodded and sighed, then poured herself a Sprite. Violette took a quick sip, not even realizing she was that thirsty. Justin squinted.

"Besides being talkative, you're reckless," Justin said casually. Violette immediately choked, let go of her drink and coughed. It didn't stop, instead the coughing got stronger because the drink Violette was drinking was a carbonated drink. Justin just looked at all of that with a straight face. Damn it! He had no intention of helping Violette!

After her coughing stopped, Violette glared at Justin. "DON'T TALK TO ME WHILE I'M DRINKING!!!"

Justin just raised an eyebrow. "It's your fault."

"You—" Violette growled, but Justin just took another drag on his cigarette and leaned back.

Violette sighed, feeling very tired today. Being angry all day, nagging all day, oh. All of these things made her head hurt.

It was silent for a few moments after Violette leaned her body next to Justin on the sofa. Violette had already arranged the files back into the folder before she leaned on the sofa.

Only the sound of Justin smoking was there. Justin kept blowing his smoky breath into the air and the smoke spreaded around them.

"Justin," Violette called. Justin just turned to her. "Since when did you become the CEO? How did you get there?" Violette asked, she should have asked this when she first met Justin yesterday. However, because Justin was annoying at that time, she could only ask him when they were sitting quietly like this.

"The company belongs to my uncle. I found him three years ago. He wanted to retire, so he handed it over to me. I've only been the CEO of the company for a year now."

Violette's eyes widened, she turned enthusiastically to Justin. "Wow? So you lived with your uncle for those three years, huh? Then we're the same," Violette said.

"I don't want to be equalized with you," Justin said nonchalantly. Violette's eyes narrowed as sharp as a razor. Damn this guy, she thought.

"Well, you're always arrogant. Not like the old Justin."

Justin clicked his tongue, straightened his body and glared at Violette sharply. "Stop comparing me and saying that I'm not the same Justin as before, Violette. Listen, no matter how bad I am in your eyes, I haven't forgotten you and everything we’ve had. You hear me?" He huffed. "You better stay away from me if you keep talking about the past in front of me. I don't like it," Justin said sharply.

Violette shocked, gaping in disbelief. What the hell was wrong with Justin? He hated talking about the past... Well, what made him like this? Didn't everything end well in the past? Violette gulped.

Justin put out his cigarette in the ashtray and then he stood up.

"Your job is done. You can go home," he said, then he just left to another room, leaving Violette dumbfounded in the living room. Violette suddenly stood up and Violette's eyes looked like she wanted to ask Justin for an explanation.

"Justin!" Violette shouted, but Justin was no longer visible in her eyes. Violette closed her eyes tightly in annoyance and confusion. He was one hundred percent different! Not the Justin she knew! Violette secretly felt sad, losing her friend who used to always be with her as a coworker. She honestly missed Justin, but Justin was different now. The current Justin also didn't want to be reminded of his past. How could Justin remember how happy they used to be with Red Lion and Hillda if he was like that? That man had really changed.

Violette took a deep breath, then she stepped out of Justin's apartment and closed the door. Closing her eyes (trying to be patient), Violette finally stepped towards the elevator to go down to the lobby.

******

The next day, Violette went back to work and didn't find Justin in his office. Well, Violette just shrugged because that was the rule, right? She had to come earlier than Justin. Violette was also calm because she didn't have to face the devil's anger early.

However, Violette was still surprised by last night's incident.

She was still thinking about last night's problems and it felt like Violette would scold Justin for deciding to forget his past. The past can be forgotten, but not completely! Just learn from it, it's better than forgetting it completely and treating it all like an endless nightmare. That would become a grudge in his heart and might darken his future.

After waiting for a few hours, Justin still hadn't arrived. Violette waited for Justin anxiously. When she finally realized that Justin might not come to the office today, Violette became worried. Well, there was no way a man who enforced discipline like that could be late. So it seemed like Justin wasn't coming today. Violette shrugged and then she sighed. Maybe talking to Megan would make her feel better. Besides, Justin wasn't coming today.

Violette entered the elevator and got off on the second floor, then she went to the marketing room. She entered the marketing room and was greeted with strange, surprised, and amazed looks from everyone. Violette frowned when she felt everyone's gaze on her. It was a bit uncomfortable actually, but that's how people were looking at her right now. Violette lowered her head, embarassed. Not long after, she heard a familiar scream. The voice gradually sounded closer to her.

"VIOLETTE!!! AH, I FINALLY MET YOU!!!!"

Ah...it's Megan. Violette lifted her face and smiled brightly. Megan immediately rushed into Violette's arms and Violette hugged her back while laughing. After that, Megan pulled Violette to walk near the girl's desk and took a chair for Violette so that Violette could sit next to her. It was unclear whose chair Megan took, but it was clear that the owner was ranting there because she was annoyed. Violette was stunned when she was listening to that person's ranting, but Megan made called her again, shook her arm and invited her to sit down. Finally, Violette sat down.

Megan started looking at Violette with an enthusiastic gaze. A thousand times more enthusiastic than usual.

"Violette! For God's sake... How was your day? I haven't seen you for two days and it feels like a year... What happened? Wow... The last time I saw you, you were being dragged away by a handsome young man! Last time too, I found out that he was our CEO. Our CEO!! Oh my God...!"

Violette just chuckled awkwardly, scratching the back of her neck which wasn't itchy at all.

Megan poked Violette's waist and the girl bounced because of it. "Hey... Come on... Tell me. He was really handsome!! I couldn't breathe at that time!" Megan said, she told the story with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. "I can't believe it if I were you. I MIGHT HAVE A CONVULSION ON THE SPOT!!!!!" Megan shouted, until all eyes were on the two of them.

Violette winced, she panicked and signaled 'don’t-be-so-loud' to Megan with her facial expression. Megan gaped, forming her mouth into a big 'O' and acting as if she was shocked like an idiot. Violette rolled her eyes and shook her head. However, Megan just laughed.

"But, dear God... His golden spike hair, his muscular body, his neat clothes, his masculine scent, his handsome face and unbothered expression, his body movements..." Violette forced Megan's mouth shut with her palm.

"Enough, Meg, enough. You’re exaggerating it," Violette said, trying to calm Megan down. Megan held Violette's hand that was covering her mouth and squirming uncontrollably. Finally, Violette removed her hand from Megan's mouth.

"HAHAHA. Well, you're probably used to it because you've seen it so many times, Violette. But, WHAT ABOUT ME? I'VE ONLY SEEN IT ONCE AND I THINK SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT HERE," she said, pointing right at her heart. Violette felt like she was going to throw up. Megan laughed out loud.

"Okay, just kidding. BUT I AM SO AMAZED BY HIM!!! WHAT DID YOU TWO DO YESTERDAY? WHAT? WHAT, VIO? COME ON TELL ME!!! AHH I'M SO EXCITED TO HEAR IT!!!"

Violette winced again, giving in to Megan's super hysterical and hyper-active attitude. Ergh—are there any tissues here? Violette needed them to stuff Megan's mouth.

"We didn't do anything, Megan. I'm always fighting with him."

Megan frowned, her expression looking a little surprised because Violette told her something she didn't expect, it was actually the opposite of what she did expect.

"Why?" she asked in a disappointed tone.

"I don't know... He doesn't like it when I bring up the past and yeah... That's it. He always gets on my nerves and we always argue," Violette said with a shrug.

Megan gaped, frowned, and moved closer to Violette.

She was surprised and enthusiastic at the same time.

"Wow, why is that? It seems like your relationship with him is not going well," Megan said. Violette nodded.

"Yeah, that's it. He was so annoying and...we never got along."

Megan stroked Violette's back. "Be patient... Maybe after a while you'll get used to it and both of you will stop fighting," she said, trying to calm Violette down. Violette sighed.

"Yeah... I hope so."

Megan nodded and Violette smiled at her.

The next day, Violette returned to the office and entered Justin's office. She waited for several hours and Justin still didn't come. What is wrong with that guy? Yesterday, Violette didn't really care about what happened to him. However, it’s been two days. There’s no way that a disciplined person like that would be so negligent, especially since it’s been two days! Violette bit her nails, feeling panicked. What was wrong with Justin?

Violette went outside, got into the elevator and went down to the twelfth floor, then looked for one of the managers' rooms and knocked softly on the manager's door. She had to know what happened to Justin! She was Justin's executive assistant, after all. If Justin needed her help with work, Violette should help him, right? So, she had to know how Justin was doing. Why didn't Justin say anything?

After the sound of 'Come in' from Justin's subordinate (HR Manager), Violette entered the room and bowed respectfully. Then, Violette began to ask politely whether the manager knew about what happened to Justin.

Huh, Violette really had to be brave to ask someone else about something like this, when she, the executive assistant, should know more about Justin! Violette would be labeled as a fake executive assistant! Besides, where was Justin? He didn't even give Violette any news.

"What? He is sick?" Violette shouted in disbelief after hearing the HR Manager's explanation.

Well, it turns out that Justin can get sick too. []
